UAVs, as one of the advanced technologies with extensive applications in military, agricultural, surveillance, and urban services industries, play a significant role in technological and economic development. Selecting an appropriate propulsion system, as a key factor in UAV performance, has a direct impact on efficiency, cost, and operational capabilities. Currently, various types of propulsion systems, including electric motors, internal combustion engines, hybrid engines, and jet engines, are used in UAVs. Each of these propulsion systems has its own advantages and limitations. For example, electric motors, due to their high efficiency and zero emissions, are suitable for small and lightweight UAVs, while internal combustion engines are more suitable for heavy-duty and long-duration missions. In Iran, considering the unique geographical needs and specific missions, developing efficient propulsion systems faces challenges such as limitations in the production of advanced batteries, shortages in sustainable fuel technology, and obstacles in the supply of components. Nevertheless, there are significant opportunities in this field, including leveraging local capacities in manufacturing internal combustion and hybrid engines, advancing lithium-ion battery technology in domestic research centers, and utilizing skilled human resources. This article examines the current state of UAV propulsion systems in Iran, analyzes the existing challenges, and outlines potential opportunities for the development and localization of this technology. The results of this study can serve as a roadmap to strengthen Iran’s UAV industry and compete in global markets. |
